We became aware of an Issue Microsoft Office 365 online was having beginning yesterday July 14th approximately 3:00PM EST. The issue was surrounding an update to the component responsible for filtering email messages. Microsoft released the following statement regarding the root cause.
Preliminary Root Cause: An update to the component responsible for filtering email messages introduced a misconfigured rule that erroneously marked messages as spam.
User Impact: Users’ email messages were erroneously getting marked as spam. This impacted both incoming and outgoing email messages.
Microsoft disabled an incorrectly configured spam rule which fixed the issue. Microsoft issued an official release that they had resolved the issue at 6:10AM EST.
If you haven’t done so already, we ask you to please check your individual Junk Folders periodically throughout the day. If the issue persists, please contact our helpdesk.

– We’re reviewing our update procedures to help catch this kind of problem during our testing cycle.
– We’re reviewing our monitoring services to find ways to reduce detection time and to improve our automated recovery processes.
– We’ll publish a post-incident report within five business days.
